Diathermy

Diathermy is a treatment used to treat vascular and benign skin lesions. It involves the use of an electrical current to heat the target lesion via a fine probe, causing a heat reaction that results in different target outcomes depending on type of lesions:

Vascular lesions- electrocoagulation: Uses less concentrated current to produce heat over a relatively large area resulting in cellular dehydration, denaturation of proteins which leads to thrombosis of blood vessel.
Benign skin lesions- Electrodesiccation: cellular dehydration and ultimately removes the lesion.

The following lesions are commonly treated with diathermy.

Skin tags
Warts
Telangiectasia
Cherry angiomas
Spider angiomas

FAQ's

Pre-Treatment Advice

Avoid excessive sun exposure prior to your treatment.
Gently exfoliate the area prior to treatment to remove any dead skin cells to allow the hair follicles to be more accessible; this will allow your therapist to work more efficiently.
Prior to appointment, ensure the area is clean, free of makeup, lotions or creams.
If the treatment area is on the body, wear comfortable loose fitting clothes if possible.
Depending on the treatment area and individual, panadol/paracetamol may be taken prior to treatment to allow for a more comfortable treatment.
Ensure you are hydrated; drink plenty of water prior to your appointment.

Pre-Treatment Advice

Keep the area clean and moisturised to prevent any infection in the treatment area. Your therapist will advise you of appropriate aftercare products.
For the first 24 hours post treatment, avoid any irritants in the treatment area; such as non-mineral makeup, perfume and fragranced lotions

Avoid any heat-based modalities and activities that may cause sweating or encourage bacterial growth in treatment area (eg. exercise, saunas, hot showers, swimming) for at least 48 hours.
Practice sun avoidance where possible and use SPF to protect from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or other negative events.

What can I expect to see post-treatment?

Local erythema and oedema can last one to two days post treatment.
Small scabs can form post treatment; do not pick and allow them to heal, picking can cause scarring or a bacterial infection.
