Electrolysis is one of the only permanent hair removal treatments available, making it an excellent solution for those struggling with unwanted hair. Unlike laser hair removal, which is most effective on dark, coarse hairs, electrolysis is not colour-blind—meaning it can treat all hair colours, including blonde, red, grey, and white. Instead of using light to target pigment, electrolysis works through different methods to permanently destroy hair follicles. But how do your therapists determine which type of electrolysis is best for you?
Electrolysis is performed using three different methods: high-frequency alternating current, a chemical reaction, or a combination of both.
Each of these techniques has been scientifically proven to permanently remove unwanted hair over time. Let’s explore how each method works
and why your therapist may select one over another.
Thermolysis uses short bursts of high-frequency alternating current, causing the surrounding tissue to vibrate rapidly. This vibration generates heat, which coagulates (destroys) the follicle cells, preventing future hair growth.
This is one of the most common forms of electrolysis and is often the first choice for new clients. However, it is best suited to shallow or fine hairs, such as peach fuzz. It is most effective on straight hair follicles as shown in the image.
Galvanic electrolysis uses a low-level direct current to create a chemical reaction inside the hair follicle. When the current interacts with the salts and water in the skin, it produces sodium hydroxide (lye)—a substance that gradually dissolves the follicle and surrounding cells.
As this method relies on a chemical reaction that spreads within the follicle, it is particularly effective for coarse, distorted, or deep-rooted hairs—especially those affected by waxing or tweezing. The image shows bent hair shafts which are effectively removed with Galvanic Electrolysis.
Blend electrolysis combines the best of both worlds—it merges the chemical destruction of galvanic electrolysis with the heat coagulation of thermolysis. This dual-action approach ensures that even the most stubborn, coarse, or deep-rooted hairs are effectively treated, including those hairs with bent shafts.
This method is especially beneficial for hormonal hair growth, such as thick hairs along the jawline, chin, or other areas affected by hormonal changes.
The best electrolysis method for you depends on several factors, including hair thickness, depth, shape, and treatment area. Here’s a general guide to how we determine the most suitable approach:
