At some point in our hair removal journeys we have suffered from an ingrown hair or two. So, let’s break down why they happen and how to stop them from reoccurring.
What are ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs are a common condition that results from any hair removal method such as waxing or shaving. Ingrown hairs can present in a few different forms, sometimes small bumps that tend to be sore or red in appearance or a hair grown back into the skin or just underneath the skin. These are often itchy and, in some cases, painful if left untreated. Basically, your hair follicles get trapped into your skin and cause small bumps or an embedded hair.
Symptoms of ingrown hairs:
What are the common causes of ingrown?
In most cases people who have thick curly hair are more prone to ingrown hairs, however, everyone can suffer at some point if the skin isn’t maintained properly after hair removal. Often dead skin clogs the opening of the hair follicle causing the hair to grow back into the skin, instead of above the skins surface. Once this happens typically the skin triggers an immune response as it detects the hair as a foreign object, resulting in the body sending inflammation and swelling around the hair resulting in a bump or in some cases a papule.
Prevention is key when it comes to ingrown hairs, so here is what to do in between hair removal treatments.
